Hull City Council has welcomed the Government’s announcement that the £2 bus fare cap will run until October 2023.

Hull City Council has welcomed the Government’s announcement that the £2 bus fare cap will run until October 2023.

Hull residents can now hop on board most East Yorkshire or Stagecoach buses for just £2 per single journey, thanks to funding from the Government.

The scheme originally started in January 2023 as a Government response to the cost-of-living crisis and was due to end on 31 March.

However, the bus fare cap has now been extended to 31 October, to ensure travel remains accessible and affordable for all.

Councillor Mark Ieronimo, portfolio holder for transportation, roads, and highways at Hull City Council, said:

“I welcome the news that the Government has decided to extend the £2 bus fare cap until October 2023.
“I am sure this will be welcomed by many people who rely on buses for their daily journeys, whether it is for work, education or family days out this summer.
“It will also help to reduce car dependency, traffic congestion, air pollution and support the recovery of the bus industry after the pandemic.”

Dave Skepper, interim managing director at Stagecoach, said:

“Stagecoach is pleased to be working with Hull City Council and East Yorkshire Buses to deliver the extended £2 capped bus fare scheme for the benefit of local people.
“Bus services provide essential transport connections for many residents to reach employment, education, healthcare and retail services, with the £2 fare encouraging more people to get on board our buses.”

A spokesperson from East Yorkshire Buses said:

“We’re glad to see that the Government has extended the £2 bus fare cap.
“We know that many of our regular customers and new passengers alike are enjoying being able to travel across the region on our buses for just £2 each journey – something that will definitely help many people in making the most of the summer season.”
