Hull City Council has presented four Frog Bikes to pupils at four schools, as awards in a competition held as part of the recent ‘Kid Alert’ programme.

Kid Alert takes place each summer, with the aim of helping support pupils with the transition from Year 6 to Year 7.

The event, which is administered and co-ordinated by First Step Sports, covers several important areas of safety, with presentations from:

  • NHS – who provided a safety talk on the use of emergency numbers (999, 111, 112) as well as teaching the recovery position.
  • Network Rail – who delivered a safety talk on the importance of railway safety and staying away from the tracks.
  • RNLI – who gave a water safety talk, explaining what to do in dangerous water situations, who to call and how to help yourself and others.
  • Humberside Fire & Rescue – discussed fire prevention, the placement of fire alarms and general fire safety tips.
  • Safer Roads Humber – explained the importance of car booster seats and the impact of seat belts on safety.
  • Hull City Council – provided talks on the dangers of litter and other environmental health issues.
  • Hull Road Safety – discussed cycle safety, including the importance of wearing a helmet while cycling.

The bikes were awarded to Stockwell Primary School, St Anthony’s Primary School, Chiltern Primary School and St Mary’s Primary School, with the schools then choosing a student to present them to.

“Supporting our young people to choose active travel and to do so in a safe way is one of the council’s primary responsibilities,” said Councillor Mark Ieronimo, cabinet portfolio holder for transportation, roads and highways.

“We’d like to congratulate the four schools who were awarded the Frog bikes and the pupils who received them. We hope they will enjoy using them as part of their daily commute to school and for leisure.”

Christy Coulter, headteacher of Stockwell Primary School, said: “Each year, we look forward to visiting Kid Alert. In fact, it’s our favourite trip of the year.

“We love learning about all the different ways of keeping safe and every single practitioner makes this extremely fun and engaging. The children always come away with a wealth of new knowledge.

“We were very excited to hear that we had won one of the bikes, and we know the child receiving this fantastic prize will really get a lot out of it.”

Stockwell Primary School pupil, Milana, said: “I am so happy I won the bike. I don't have one at the minute, so this will help me get to secondary school.

“I really enjoyed attending Kid Alert, my favourite part was learning about bike helmet safety - which will now be really useful.”

Jacqui Marshall, head of school at Chiltern Primary School, said: “It is a real honour that our school was chosen to receive one of the Frog bikes and the student who has received it will make great use of it.

“Kid Alert is such a vital part of Year 6’s transition to secondary school, educating the children on dangers like railway level crossings, of which there are many in the city, and water safety advice.

“Thank you to the NHS, Humberside Fire & Rescue and the road safety team from Hull City Council on their eye-opening talks.

“We will be back every year that Kid Alert is available to attend, as it is so invaluable.”
